Yesterday was moving day, from Brest to Morlaix … by train.
And so, off we went, bikes in one hand, our rolling suitcases in the other …

What did people do before they invented the rolling suitcase? Wait, I remember! Back in the 1980s we carried them. And/or had a backpack. Or both. And built up our arm and back strength. We were so damn strong back then! Kids today have no idea what it was like in the 1980s to wander through Paris for miles, carrying your suitcase, looking for an affordable hotel. What did we do before hotels.com and Expedia? We wandered and hoped. And looked in our Let’s Go France book to figure out where the youth hostel was.
The woman at our hotel in Morlaix had explained (via email and then with the help of Google translate) that when we got to the Morlaix train station, we should take the elevator up to the top of the bridge that goes across the tracks … and then take the last elevator (on the north side of the tracks) back down. Here’s the bridge …

Next to the café at the bottom of the bridge, look for the gate that has the name of the hotel on it (La Passerelle). Buzz the buzzer and she’ll buzz us in. We did and she did, and we were in … and our room, the family room, is quite nice. And large. Two rooms and three beds – perhaps the biggest room I’ve ever had in France if you don’t count the dorm rooms of youth hostels.

We eventually headed into town, which is down, down, down. How far down? The path we took is called Les Cent Marche (The 100 Steps). It was actually 107. Here’s Don going down some of the 107 …

The town is nice, dominated by the viaduct..

We wandered around and eventually went back up, up, up the 100 steps and then the railroad bridge to La Passerelle, took a nap, then back down, down, down to town and dinner at a crepe place. My dessert crepe was the best dessert crepe I’ve ever had: pears, warm chocolate, Chantilly (whipped cream) and vanilla glace. Don had one with pommel (apples) and caramel (caramel) sauce). It was also delicious.

It’s now the next morning and it’s 8:49 and 46 degrees … so we’re gonna wait a while and then go for a ride north to the coast. Stay tuned for details and photos …
